Yesterday we heard the disappointing news that Robert Downey Jr. would not be joining director Jon Favreau for the adaptation of Platinum Comics' series Cowboys & Aliens due to "scheduling issues." However, since the actor hadn't lined up a follow-up project to the forthcoming comedy Due Date, no one was too certain what was getting in the way. Well, now EW has learned that Sherlock Holmes 2 is being fast tracked for a June start date. Meanwhile, over at Deadline Hollywood, a tidbit of info hidden in some agency news about Shia LaBeouf reveals an estimated May start for production on Transformers 3.
On Sherlock Holmes, after the huge tease of an ending (don't worry we won't give anything away just yet), I can't wait to see where a sequel will take us. Don't worry about a script being hastily written because Warner Bros. commissioned writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Paper Man) back in September to begin work on a sequel. Although, I wonder why writers Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg weren't brought back to pen the sequel after doing such a fine job on the first one? Either way, some new writers will probably keep the franchise fresh without veering away from what made this Holmes great.
On Transformers, I know I'm in the minority here, but I had very little beef with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, so a third go-round with the Autobots and Decepticons sounds just fine to me. While I agree the WGA strike certainly left something to be desired on the story front and it could've dropped 30 minutes and still got the job done, I'm not sure why everyone was expecting such a high caliber story from a Michael Bay film. Those words just don't go together. It's not as if the first film was a work of cinematic genius, but rather just a good time at the movies watching robots transform and fight, and that's exactly what I got out of the second one. So bring on Transformers 3, but let's keep the running time around 2 hours all right?
