Glee returned to E4 after a three-week break with its biggest audience of the series last night.

The musical comedy grabbed 1.6 million for E4, up 9% from its previous high. The show had a further 352,000 viewers on E4+1.

The show has continued to increase its audiences, with last night’s episode rating 40% higher than the season premiere. E4 was the third most watched channel at 9pm yesterday, one of the rare occasions when a multichannel beat a terrestrial.

Terrestrial ratings: All BBC1 and ITV1 soaps were up compared to last week’s ratings. On BBC1, daytime soap Doctors picked up 1.6m – a gain of 23% vs. last week. EastEnders was the most watched TV show of the day with 9.2m at 8pm, up 5% from last week. ITV1’s Emmerdale attracted 7.1m, up 4% vs. last week; while the second edition of Coronation Street had 9.0m – a rise of 6% vs. last week.

BBC1’s The One Show rose 14% vs. last week to 4.8m at 7pm, following the news that presenter Adrian Chiles would be leaving the show and moving to ITV later this year. Chiles was reportedly furious over the BBC’s plans to replace him with Chris Evans on Friday editions of the show.

The better lead-in helped Bang Goes The Theory post one of its highest ratings ever, up 29% vs. last week. At 9pm, a repeat of New Tricks gained 5% vs. last week.

There was increased news interest due to volcanic ash disrupting UK airspace, with BBC’s News at Ten rising 25% vs. last week to 5m. ITV1’s news bulletin at the same time was up 48% to 3.1m.

An hour earlier on ITV1, Joanna Lumley’s (Patsy!) Nile dropped only a tick vs. last week to win its slot with 4.7m. Out of the Frying Pan was flat vs. last week at 1.2m for BBC2, while on Channel 4 Blitz Street was a tick down vs. last week’s slot average.
